"My people will sleep for one hundred years. When they awaken, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back." -Louis David Riel

Eagle (Surveying His Kingdom)

Mark was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is the youngest of five siblings. In his early years Mark showed an aptitude for anything artistic. His mother, an artist herself, recognized this and furnished Mark with a multitude of art supplies. He soon became adept at all of them. His mother would send him to spend his summer holidays with her eldest brother at his country home. There he learned the skills for surviving in the Canadian wilderness as well as some of his people's culture and traditions.

He was given a traditional name, White Eagle Wanting To Fly, as well as his Christian name. But that would change. Upon the passing of his eldest uncle he was renamed, Fire Hawk Dancer by Mi'kmaq elder, Wanda Whitebird in the summer of 2004.
